BM UMASS Lowell
Plays drums, percussion, and marimba professionally throughout the region.

Drums and percussion have been Derek’s life since the fourth grade and his passion hasn’t let up since. 

Derek is currently finishing his BM at UMass Lowell where he has performed with numerous ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Orchestra, Small Jazz Combos, Jazz Rock Big Band, and Marching Band.  He has also been a guest performer in various student and faculty recitals within the school.   Derek has performed extensively as a freelance percussionist throughout New England with Cape Ann Symphony, New England Philharmonic, Concord Orchestra, Melrose Orchestra, Nashua Chamber Orchestra, Boston Civic Orchestra, and many different local theater productions. He also spent one summer with Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps and toured across the Midwest with them, earning MVP in the pit section.   As a drumset player he has performed in a variety of bands of varying styles including bluegrass, rock, Latin, fusion, and jazz.  He is currently the drummer with The Brian Cogger Band and  fills in with numerous other ensembles.

As an instructor, Derek has taught private lessons to students of all ages, has been the Director of Percussion at Triton Regional High School where he taught the drumline and winter percussion ensemble, has been the Percussion Tech with the Salem (MA) High School concert winter percussion ensemble, and is currently instructing the drumline at Milford (MA) High School.

Derek has studied with several world-class teachers including Roger Brockelbank, Jim Latini, Mark Wheeler, Jeff Fischer, and jazz legend Fred Buda.  At UMass Lowell he was awarded the prestigious Robert S. Loya memorial scholarship which is awarded to one percussionist per year.   Derek accepts students of all ages, levels, and styles, and has experience working with special needs students as well
